How do the first ionization energies of all alkali metals compare in general with those of the alkaline earth?

The correct answer is (b). Alkali metals have only one outer shell electron and therefore are quite happy to get rid of it (very low ionization energy) Alkaline Earth metals have two outer shell electrons, and although are quite happy to get rid of one electron, they are not quite as happy as the Alkali metals.
