Is it possible for an American woman to be sold into slavery?

Unfortunately this happens to women all around the world - regardless of their nationality and yes, this happens to several Americans every year. Sometimes they are kidnapped, but oftentimes a trusted "friend" will say that they can get a job overseas as a maid/waitress/nanny, etc and will even help pay for their airplane ticket. As soon as they arrive at their destination, all of their doentation is taken away and captors often threaten the women with their death or the death of their family if they try to escape. It's a sad situation.
