Newly Arrived Immigrant in London Looking for Friends?

How can a new arrived to make friends with British people? I just came to the UK, but I speak English (better than a bunch natives I've seen around; you know who) and I have a big curiosity and respect towards the English people. Before getting here, I lived in the US, and it was pretty simple to make friends there: Buy some beer and a lot of hamburger and sausages, season it with spicy and barbeque it on your fence less back yard, and those crazy American neighbors will approach, for sure, without no invitation at all. And I liked it. Also attended a (Presbyterian) church, and was a volunteer with language schools, libraries, social services, went to sport bars to watch American Football(which I hate) and baseball (hate too) and cheered with the scores. Yet in London, it's proving to be a big challenge to make friends with the natives. What's up with you guys, you don't like hamburgers and beer or what? lol. Now serious, There's a big community from my country here (I am Brazilian), so it's not that I can't get friends, but I really want to get integrated to my new country (England), but so far it's been hard and unfruitful, so any suggestion? I'm 40,straight and divorced, low middle cl (I'm a cable tv guy), where can I go to meet the same? Please haters don't "go back to your country" me: you know I'm staying. Funny thing is I had more British friends in Brazil than I do here. Hellllp?
